Restoring the
mind-body connection.

Chronic stress and poor posture disrupt your breathing mechanics, ultimately causing a disconnect between your mind and your nervous system. When this happens, your mind moves on from the day's stress, but your physical body continues to hold it. Because this response happens deep within your nervous system, you cannot simply think your way back to a state of calm.

This disruption can show up globally across your entire system as shallow chest breathing and automatic physical tightness. For many, it acts as a full-body protective reflex that pulls the posture inward, almost like the body is trying to curl forward into a defensive fetal position.

Ryan's work focuses on restoring the mind-body connection by training proper body mechanics, correcting your breathing patterns, and building real-time physical awareness. Instead of just managing your symptoms, the goal is to help your system release the stress it has been storing.

The nervous system doesn't understand words or affirmations. It understands physical cues while your awareness is in your body: breath, and slow intentional movement.

Services

Ryan can bring his table, or chair and all supplies to your home, hotel, or place of business. If you're unsure which session you need, describe what's going on and he'll recommend one.

Traditional Massage

Standard therapeutic massage: circulation, adhesions, stiffness, muscular fatigue. Swedish and deep tissue technique at the pressure you request. This is the session where you can rest and let the work be done for you.

Best for localized pain, athletic recovery, and maintenance

Massage for Subconscious Tension

Ryan's own method. Heavy pressure makes a guarded body brace harder, so this starts light and uses position changes, breathing mechanics, and targeted neuromuscular work instead of force. Depth increases as the guarding releases. You stay present for this one; the technique works through your own awareness of your body.

Best for a clenched jaw, elevated shoulders, shallow breathing, and persistent fatigue

Emotional Release Therapy

Pat Jackman's method. Works the areas people armor most heavily: throat, abdomen, and pelvis. Ryan reads the physical signs of dissociation and paces the work accordingly. Emotion may surface, though it isn't required for the session to be effective.

Best for emotion that lives in the body

The Signature Modality

Massage for Subconscious Tension

Conventional deep tissue applies heavy pressure to shorten muscle resistance. A guarded nervous system reads that as threat and tightens further, which is why some people leave a deep massage sore and no looser than they arrived. This method works the other direction: light pressure, breathing mechanics, and position changes first, with depth added only as the guarding actually reduces.

I

Map the pattern

Ryan locates the areas of tension and how they connect and respond to pressure.

II

Validate the shield

The body is placed into its protective position and the shielding parts are acknowledged and worked on.

III

Safety in the open position

Parasympathetic breath is used to cultivate safety with movement and positions that are more open.

IV

Correct the displacement

The body is placed back into a neutral position that is more open, and structural work is done to improve body mechanics.

How it shows up

How subconscious tension shows up

In the body

Muscle guarding
A localized protective response where the surface tissues tighten to protect the deeper layers. Usually this happens in anticipation of pain.
Shallow breathing / breath holding
A restricted breathing pattern doesn't fully engage the expansion and contraction of the diaphragm, abdomen, and chest. This lack of gentle movement creates systemic tightness and stuck tissue, limits oxygen exchange, signals distress to the brain, and continuously triggers the body's fight-or-flight survival response.
Chronic bracing
A persistent, autopilot state of global tension in a perpetual subtle startle response. This continuous muscular engagement locks joints, restricts fluid movement, and drains physical and mental energy reserves.

In behavior and thinking

Hypervigilance
Scanning your environment and your relationships for danger, rejection, or failure.
People-pleasing
Setting aside your own needs and boundaries to keep the peace.
Overworking
Operating on the belief that rest isn't safe and productivity is survival.

Ryan Calhoon

Ryan Calhoon has been a CMT for 9 years. He works at a physical therapy office in Walnut Creek and Senspa in San Francisco, and sees his own clients for in-home sessions.

He came to the nervous system side of the work through his own hardships with mental health and trauma. Ryan has devoted himself to understanding the inner workings of the mind, the nervous system, and the immobilizing disconnect that occurs somatically when emotions and/or the energy of trauma are not expressed.

Ryan reads every book he can get his hands on about mental health, trauma, and somatics, and has designed his own modality around bringing awareness to subconscious tension in the body.

He holds space like no other and is especially interested in helping people work through patriarchal trauma, deprogramming identification with unhealthy social structures, and facilitating reengagement with empathy, softness, and safe boundaries.

Ryan is also a musician, dancer, and filmmaker with a creative spark for helping others through artistic expression.
