A method for the tension your body holds without being asked — the guarding, the held breath, the bracing that heavy pressure alone does not resolve.
Massage for Subconscious Tension is Ryan Calhoon's own method, built over nine years as a CAMTC-certified massage therapist and shaped by the study of how the nervous system holds stress in the body. It is the session most people book, and the one that is hardest to find anywhere else.
Chronic stress and poor posture disrupt your breathing mechanics, ultimately causing a disconnect between your mind and your nervous system. When this happens, your mind moves on from the day's stress, but your physical body continues to hold it. Because this response happens deep within your nervous system, you cannot simply think your way back to a state of calm.
This disruption can show up globally across your entire system as shallow chest breathing and automatic physical tightness. For many, it acts as a full-body protective reflex that pulls the posture inward, almost like the body is trying to curl forward into a defensive fetal position.
Conventional deep tissue applies heavy pressure to shorten muscle resistance. A guarded nervous system reads that as threat and tightens further, which is why some people leave a deep massage sore and no looser than they arrived. Relief lasts a day or two and the pattern returns, because the pattern was never the muscle. It was the instruction the muscle was following.
This method works the other direction. Light pressure, breathing mechanics and position changes come first, with depth added only as the guarding actually reduces.
In practice the steps interchange after the second. Ryan moves back from three to two, or from four to two, depending on how the tissue responds. The order below is for clarity; the actual sequence is dictated by the body in front of him.
Ryan locates the areas of tension and how they connect and respond to pressure.
The body is placed into its protective position and the shielding parts are acknowledged and worked on.
Parasympathetic breath is used to cultivate safety with movement and positions that are more open.
The body is placed back into a neutral position that is more open, and structural work is done to improve body mechanics.
60 minutes $175 · 90 minutes $250 · 120 minutes $300. Rates go up a little with distance. Sessions take place in your own space anywhere in the East Bay and greater Bay Area.
This work is not right for everyone or every moment. Tell Ryan what is going on before you book, and ask your own doctor if you are unsure — they know your history, and a website does not.
Send your address, the session length you want, and anything relevant. Ryan will confirm the rate and send available times.
